Stock Gaylard Glamping – The Story So Far…

Andy & Josie returned from Africa to the UK in 1999 to help run Stock Estate and looked for new ideas for income.

Inspired by the Oak dominated landscape of the estate they began The Stock Gaylard Oak Fair in 2005. This has grown from 1,500 visitors to a two days event welcoming over 10,000 visitors and 200 stalls.

With the amount of timber produced on the estate it became clear this could add value and this led to the purchase of a mobile sawmill and employment of Jamie Ross, a trained cabinet maker, who helped use the Estates own timber to repair the house & outbuildings.

Jamie had the idea he wanted to live in the woods on the estate which helped Andy formulate the thought of ‘upmarket camping’. Many of Andy and Josie’s friends in Africa ran tented safari camps so why could this not work in the UK? Thus, Stock Gaylard glamping was born with fixed sites where two families could come and enjoy the great outdoors here in Dorset.

In 2008 Jamie and his girlfriend Amber (now wife) settled into a yurt (ger) he had recently made in Brickles Wood.  That winter the ash timbers for six 15ft yurts were prepared and a steam bender created with an old water tank and gas bottles! Cath Pratley, a local willow worker and seamstress came in the spring to make the covers. Rustic furniture and beds were made out of our own Ash and Oak and wood-fired heaters created from old oil drums to feed the outdoor baths and basins.

Two sites were created with two bedroom yurts and a living/kitchen yurt including a two ring hob for cooking, as well as a traditional campfire. Our first visitors arrived in June 2009 and we discovered we were providing ‘glamping’ accommodation that we believed had only previously applied to the posh camping at Glastonbury.

While the original concept remains we can now accommodate over 40 peoples across four sites in their own beautiful private settings. While our sites are still ‘off-grid’, the wonders of solar now means all now have fridges and lighting as well as instantly warm gas showers, and fully functioning kitchens.

Andy & Josie are aiming to retire and we are looking for a manager/couple to take over and develop the business alongside their son Jack. We believe the opportunities in the glamping business are still vast and therefore need someone with energy, enthusiasm and an open mind to see how the business can grow.

Our ideal candidate will be integral in pushing our business forward and be prepared to be hands on and problem solvers during the busy summer months. They will be expected to lead the changeover team, manage staff, organise bookings and undertake the meeting and greeting of guests. When the yurts are closed they will be working on ways of expansions, improvements and more as well as introducing other ways to add value including the sale of venison, on site activities (eg: foraging, farms walks etc) and more. There will also be an element of administrative tasks including pricing, risk assessments, profit and loss, bookings and promotion.

The key skills and attributes include:

  • Full driving licence
  • Keen eye for detail
  • Weekend working
  • A people person
  • People Management
  • Computer literate
  • Experience in a similar tourism role would be advantageous but not essential

We are looking for Seasonal Staff from March - October to join our changeover team. 

The role could be part-time or more hours could be found for a full time role for the right candidate. 

Jobs may include: 

Cleaning & changeover of glamping sites 

Outdoor maintenance 

On call for meet & greets 

Helping in setting up summer events 

and more..
